Hello love,
There was a time I believed that if I could just be more disciplined, everything would fall into place.
I'd wake up at 5am, meditate, journal, yoga... Three hours of uninterrupted bliss before the world wakes up so I can finally create content and work on my business con-sis-tent-ly.
But if you tried and you have kids, you know how that goes. You wake at 5, and your child wakes at 5:15 shouting Good moooorning with all the joy and none of the boundaries.
Even if you don't have kids. Sometimes it's harder to wake up that early. Sometimes there's a migraine lurking in the background. Or dinner takes longer because you were having a great bonding moment around the table...
Life happens.
And trying to discipline our way into more productivity really feels to me as if we're trying to put life into neat boxes that say "your chaos isn't welcome here".
But what is creativity made of, if not chaos? What's a life well-lived if it isn't for the moments we hadn't planned? How would we ever have anything interesting to share if it all went according to plan?
So here's what I've learned: it doesn’t matter if I’m perfectly consistent or not. It doesn't matter what my creative moments look like - whether I'm working on my business or on my personal projects.
What matters is devotion.
Contrary to "discipline", devotion is softer.
It doesn't imply that there's something you're not doing right, instead it invites you to quietly say yes to what matters most.
Through devotion, through carving out the time you re-ascertain your love to yourself. And it doesn't matter how long or how good your work is. What matters is to show up and to reconnect with your soul.
So if you’ve been beating yourself up about discipline, what would happen if you chose devotion instead?
I'll leave you with one of my recent Notes on Substack:
Creating content is not just an active practice of putting words together and producing something that hopefully resonates with your readers.
That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
Behind that, there’s the time spent contemplating, reflecting, bringing awareness to your thoughts, feelings, opinions and reactions.
There’s the time intaking what the world has to give you so you can then outpour what you have to give it back.
It’s a sacred exchange, like ebb and flow, an in-breath and then an out-breath.
And if you’d like to build a sustainable content rhythm anchored in that kind of devotion, that’s what we do together in the Soulful Content Strategy Package (link here)
Power and light,
