Hello love,
A tight feeling in my throat. Confusion in my eyes. Where to start? Do I even have anything valuable to say? Maybe I should just skip writing today.
Self-doubt, I've learned, is a manifestation of your nervous system not having found grounding and safety.
Before that, I believed that I was the problem.
I thought that I wasn't confident enough, that I didn't believe in myself enough.
I thought that if I made myself stronger, if I tried harder, organized better, or found the right productivity system, I could push through and become a different, more empowered person.
But empowerment isn't about putting on layers of protections.
It's about softening.
Embracing the entirety of ourselves and finding that ground and safety from within so we never have to hide again.
Meditation, yes, but also...
Mindfulness and meditation are well-researched tools, and a regular practice definitely helps. But it's just one tool, in a much larger toolkit.
Sometimes you want something that is more accessible, easier, more direct?
One of my favourite tools : the voice.
Why does it work?
I don't know about you but nothing brings me shivers or tears faster than a voice.
In super short: your voice activates the vagus nerve, which sends a signal to your body that you're safe.
It's being widely researched atm, but it's ancient wisdom: think about it, we've always used our voices to soothe our children and connect to each other.
We can also use our voice to soothe ourselves and connect to our power.
Need soothing?
Start with humming.
Find a tone that feels soothing, maybe add a gentle swaying movement as if you're rocking a child. Let the vibration fill your chest and throat.
Notice how your body responds. Does your breathing slow? Do your shoulders drop slightly?
Here are 2 tracks I particularly recommend:
The powerful approach
When you're ready, let your voice out fully.
Sing in the car, in the shower, while cooking dinner. It doesn't matter if you think you can't sing (although anybody can learn) , this isn't about performance, it's about expression!
When you sing with your whole heart, you're not just regulating your nervous system. You're reconnecting with your voice, your power, your right to take up space in the world.
My favourites: How far I'll go, Let it go, and anything by Adele (not that I have her voice!)
Your capacity grows
A regulated nervous system changes everything.
From how we respond to our kids and our loved ones, to how we make decisions to protect or to grow, how we manage our tasks and how we respond to life's daily challenges.
And there are many small, accessible ways to support yourself throughout the day, and the more you use them, the more capable you become.
One of them is your voice. It's always with you.
Use it.
Power and light,
Jessica
