the silent rules we follow

Hello love,

Is there a lesson in your business that you need to learn over and over again?

One of them for me is that the rules that I impose on myself should be questioned and challenged just as much as the rules from traditional marketing.

Like that year I wanted to be present daily on Instagram. On paper it looked good. It would be fun. Creative.

I even set this theoretical boundary of "post it then close it". Theoretical because of course I couldn't prevent myself to scroll.

On paper it would bring me more than it would cost me.

In reality? It wasn't even a 50/50. It was draining me of my time and confidence, for ... close to 0 return. Yet, I continued for a long time before giving myself permission to ditch it.

You see, our brains love rules.

They’re like shortcuts. Solutions to repeated problems.

But we forget that rules are only meant to serve us, not to enslave us.

And once a decision we've made - or a habit we've kept - is draining us more than it serves, we would be fools not to question it.

How to spot a draining rule

Your body knows before your mind does.

Think of one of these you follow in your day-to-day business life and notice what happens in your body.

  • Is there a constriction in your throat? A knot in your stomach?
  • Do you clench your jaws? Is there tension or nervousness in your muscles?
  • Or do you feel ease and flow, like a joyful creativity vibe?

Permission to break your own rules

Here’s what I want you to remember: this is your business. Your life. You have to live in it and with it.

Don’t ever let good advice become a cage that stops you from enjoying your business.

Just like a gardener tending to your plants, you're allowed to experiment, you’re allowed to adjust, to make mistakes and to pick new plant, or new methods when what you've tried so far isn't working for you.

In other words, you make the rules, and you can break them too.

Your turn

What’s one business rule - self-imposed or picked up from someone else - that’s been draining your energy lately? Something that makes you feel constricted instead of creative?

Maybe it’s time to let it go. And if you’re feeling like there's a lot more in your business that could use this kind of gentle reassessment, stay tuned.

I have something coming that might be exactly what you need.

Power and light,

Jessica
