Hello love,
Sometimes I feel really exhausted when I look at the mountain of decisions I have to make in my business.
And I think it's not so much because I can't decide, but I often find myself second-guessing myself or weighing in the pros and cons, especially when the smart way to do it (supposedly) doesn't feel like the way I want to do it.
- Should I keep this offer or retire it? Should I tweak it or leave it as is.
- Is this collaboration worth my energy?
- Is this client or project really what's best for me?
- Should I say yes to this speaking opportunity or let it be?
Over the years, however, I've come to make fewer misalinged decisions by learning something essential. The "right" direction doesn't sit in my brain, it sits in my body.
Ask yourself: “How does my body react to that?”
Your body holds the answer regardless of your personality type, Enneagram, Human Design, or astrological sign.
You know something’s right or wrong not because of how you story-tell your way into or out of it, but because your body has an immediate reaction.
Example
I had heard about joint ventures and co-hosted webinars from a marketing expert I admire, and although I had already decided not to do that in this season of my life, I considered it and started listing all the reasons why I should, or shouldn’t, do it.
So I stopped and went straight to my body: “How do you react to that?”
Immediately: constriction in my stomach, heavy weight on my shoulders, face shutting down. I know I can do webinars - I’ve done them before. But right now? My body gave me a clear no.
Why this works better than “gut feeling"
Sometimes we mistake gut feelings with fear and let that keep us small. But you can tell the difference :
- Fear feels like nervousness and “who am I to…” thoughts.
- Body wisdom feels different, it doesn't have thoughts, just sensations that guide you towards about alignment.
How to use it:
- Ask your brain to step aside for a minute, then ask the question out loud: “How does my body react to /name the decision you're hesitating with/?”
- Notice the immediate physical response.
- Trust it, even if your head has other ideas.
Bonus tip: When the answer isn’t immediately clear, try saying out loud: “Please show me the answer about this.” Usually within 48 hours, I get a very clear sign.
This cuts through overthinking because you’re not looking for justifications, you’re trusting your inner knowing.
This body wisdom approach is woven throughout tending to my roots: we question all the pillars and foundations of your business with this kind of embodied awareness, plus practical guidance for each area.
The series is free on Substack, make sure to sign up here, then head over to the Tending to my roots section.
I've also created an accompanying digital, printable guide that gathers all the lessons and prompts so you can go through the process without any screens, year after year.
Whatever you choose, remember that you're not supposed to always have it all figured it out, and you're not supposed to always figure it out alone.
Power and light,
Jessica
